Felting is a magical process, Fluffy carded wool becomes a cohesive strong fabric with care and coaxing the barbs on the wool cling together making it the perfect material to create beautiful pieces while at the same time creating the fabric. I only use quality materials in my work, it makes a difference. Merino wool is my go to. I also love the natural colors and texture of Shetland & Gotland wools.
I predominantly use the "wet felting" technique, where the carded wool (roving) is placed in layers, wetted down with warm soapy water and then friction is added by rolling and working the wool, once the wool is a cohesive fabric I can begin the process of shaping.
I also use the Nuno Felting technique. It is my favorite for garments. A layer of silk fabric is laid out and a fine layer of wool roving is placed on top. The wool is them worked into the silk using warm soapy water and friction. This results in a light and airy garment, the silk is the layer usually touching the wearer. Its a beautiful process, the wool will shrink during the felting/fulling process however the silk does not, it rouches and is an artful and soft liner for the garment.
From time to time I needle felt, using a barbed needle on dry wool. Usually I only needle felt to add design or for touch ups and repairs.
Please take a moment to scroll though my gallery of some of my felted work, thank you.
